How To Prepare For A Long Distance Move From California To Portland

At GPS Moving one of the many long distance routes we specialize in is moving from California to Oregon. You may find yourself relocating and using this route if you are moving to start a new business, if you get a job transfer, if you’re looking to retire interstate, if you’re travelling to school (or back), or if you’re moving to settle and start a family. Whatever the case, we are here to help you get prepared for the long distance move so that it all goes smoothly. Read on to learn more.

Carry the essential items with you

There are some items that are just too precious to leave with anyone else. More fitting in this case, there are some items that you may need while your furniture is somewhere on the 1000-plus mile journey between Southern California and Portland. This includes items such as medicine, important documents, keys, money, jewelry, etc. Carry these with you just in case you need them at any point in between. And of course, if you have pets plan to travel with them.

Get moving storage if you need it

Storage is a great supplement to moving, especially long distance moves. Some of the challenges you may face while moving from CA to OR can be solved via storage. For example, if you find that you have excess furniture or that you need to make some renovations to the new place in Portland you can simply seek temporary storage with your mover. You can also put your furniture in storage if you’re still looking for a residence in Portland and have nowhere to store your belongings in the meantime.

Have your utilities connected beforehand

Another important step when it comes to moving long distance is to have your utilities connected beforehand. You don’t want to get to your new property only to realize that you have no hot water or internet. Talk to your real estate agent and plan to have the residence connected to utilities such as water, gas, and cable. And don’t forget to change your mailing address too.

Make sure the movers have access to the new premises

Don’t let the movers get to your new residence only to find no one there, or to find the place locked. If the mover has to wait for you you’ll most likely be slapped with a surcharge. Have someone there waiting. If possible be there to receive the movers yourself and to supervise the process. That way you can direct what goes where and that will make settling in much easier.

Dispose excess baggage before the move

Because long distance moves are more costly, and because you get charged more as the volume of your goods increases, it make a lot of sense for one to trim off the excess baggage and travel as lean as possible. A few weeks before the move start to go through your household goods and sort the clutter from the important stuff. Then plan to sell or donate old or unused clothes, appliances, toys, tools, etc.

If you follow the above tips then moving to Portland should be easier and enjoyable even. If you need more help talk to us at GPM Moving for assistance.
