Long Distance Moving In December? Here’s How to Make It Work

Moving long distance in December can be a little daunting but there is no reason why you shouldn’t pull it off if you put your ducks in order. A little planning and foresight is all you need to be in your new home by Christmas stuffing and marinating the holiday turkey. Planning on moving out of San Diego this December? Here are a few tips from us on how to pull your move off without a hitch.

1. Move before the holidays begin
The entire period between Christmas and New Year is technically a holiday period. During this time many movers will have shut down, rental companies too may be out of service, and even finding accommodation while on the road might be hard to secure. And let’s not forget the heavy traffic caused by folks travelling back home. To avoid all that trouble, move before the holidays begin.

2. Avoid moving on weekends
Weekends during the holiday month or December are not the best time to be on the road. Not only will your long distance move take much longer than anticipated, it will also cost more because of longer man hours by your long distance mover, higher fuel costs, and possibly higher accommodation rates during the process. If you can help it, therefore, plan to have our move carried out during weekdays when fewer people are traversing state highways.

3. Book your move as early as possible
With many businesses shutting down for the holidays anywhere from mid-December, and others operating at reduced capacity as the holidays beckon, finding out of state movers in December should not be taken for granted. Book your move as early as possible. Ideally you should have your move booked 4 to 8 weeks in advance just to make sure your dates are locked in.

4. Plan to move in a few days to Christmas
How many days will it take you to move long distance from your current address to your new one? Do your research and then plan to move early enough such that you’ll be settled in a few days to Christmas. The last thing you want is to have to move into your new space just a day to Christmas and then have to juggle between unpacking and preparing for the festivities. If you move in a few days prior and possibly have your mover unpack your furniture for you, you’ll have a few days to relax and plan your holiday activities.

5. Make sure the utilities in the new house are up and running
A lot of states across the US experience cold winters in December. So even though you may be coming from a relatively warmer state, remember that heating will be very important in some of the locations you might be moving to. As a result, make sure that the utilities in the new house are ready; the most critical being heating, gas, and lighting.

Are you moving this December? Have you made sufficient plans to ensure a smooth move? Have you factored in all the above tips?
