Should you insure Your Furniture During a Move

Securing a trustworthy out of state movers is not all you need to do when it comes to safeguarding your goods during a move. A lot more emphasis needs to be paid to insurance. Have you done all there is to be done when it comes to securing your precious goods? Do you know that there’s more that you could possibly be doing? Read all about it below.

About Mover’s Insurance

Most movers will offer you Movers insurance when you sign up with them. However, it is important to note that most movers have insurance covers taken out to safeguard them in case of loss or destruction or property. This is insurance taken out against their crews and trucks, not against your furniture. Other movers do have some sort of insurance for your goods while in transit. However, in most cases the value insured against your goods is not usually sufficient. That is, you’ll get compensated for just a fraction of what your goods are worth, not the full amount.

Third party insurance

The good news is that, whether your mover is providing you with enough insurance or not, you can go out on your own and take out a separate insurance cover for your furniture. Most insurers offer these types of covers. So you could start with your home insurer. A moving cover will only set you back a few hundred dollars depending on the value of your goods. In return you get to know that you’ll be fully compensated should your goods get damaged, lost or stolen during the move.

How much insurance do you need?

Your insurer will ask you to fill a form listing all the items being moved. You will also indicate the value of each. The total value to be insured will be that required to replace all the items. So if that adds up to about, say $15,000, that will be the value insured against. High value items such as antiques and heirlooms or jewelry may need to be insured separately and the premium for that may be a little bit higher. Consult your insurer about this.

How much does insurance cost?

If you are insuring furniture worth $15,000 as estimated above, the amount you’ll need to pay for this will be about a dollar for every $100 value in goods. This means that for the $15,000 value in goods you may just need to pay about $150. Different insurers offer different rates. But in most cases, you can budget for about $100 to $300 in insurance. If you have high-value items aim for a higher budget.

Finding the right insurer

You shouldn’t find it difficult to get an insurer for your move. The company already insuring your house and the furniture inside it is the best place to start. Because you already have an existing relationship with them, they should give you a fairly good rate. Who knows, you might even be covered for moving insurance under your existing contract. If that doesn’t work then simply search online and compare quotes from the major providers in your area. This should only take you a few minutes.
