Do You Need To Crate Your Goods For Moving? Find Out!

What is crating?

Crating refers to the process and practice of packing goods in crates during transportation. This happens to some newly-manufactured goods as they head to stores. It also happens to some store purchases as they head to buyers. And in the moving industry it happens to some moving goods as they are moved from point A to point B. Some goods are placed in crates directly and others are crated after being packed in boxes.

Why are goods crated?

There are two main reasons why goods are crated. The more common one is protection. Crates are tough and are used in order to protect delicate or high-value goods. Items such as artwork, e.g. vases and paintings need crates if they are to get to their destinations in one piece. The same can also be said of some electronics.

The other reason is ease of handling. Some items are oddly-shaped and cannot be easily handled unless they are in crates. Machinery equipment is a good example of items that fall into this example. When placed in crates, such items can easily be moved about using rollers or forklifts.

What types of goods require crates?

There are quite a number of goods that require crates when being moved. Some good examples include:

  • TVs
  • Microwaves
  • Laptops
  • Sound systems
  • Paintings
  • Carvings
  • Vases and moldings
  • Motors
  • Gear boxes
  • Bikes
  • Vehicle body kits

Benefits of crating goods during transit

Crating goods during transit has a number of benefits that many movers can attest to. They include:

  • Crates help to save space because they can be easily stacked atop each other inside trucks. This reduces the number of trips transporters have to make and thereby cuts down on delivery timeframes considerably. It also reduces cost of transportation.
  • Crates are stable and won’t move about during transit. Some goods such as machinery parts are round in shape and will roll about when in transit. However, crates have flat bases that keep them still even during rough rides.
  • Crates prevent goods from knocking against each other and resulting in dents, scruffs, or breakage. This saves movers and transporters money and keeps their clients happy.
  • Crates allow for fully mechanized handling via pallets. Bulky goods are not easy to move about, either when packing, loading or offloading. However, once placed in crates and attached to pallets, they can be easily hoisted and moved about.
  • Crates can be re-used over and over. Crates do not have to be used just once. They can be reused many times over until they get damaged or meet their age limit. And even after that they can be used for other functions.
